Three painters! I had the pleasure of selecting artists for the 2016 Visiting Curator Exhibition without ever setting out to focus on the medium of painting. This was amusing! No fuss, but these artists seem to share a pure passion for making us see. It was the legendary conceptualist maestro Alighiero Boetti who uttered that the artist’s role was not about creating something new to the world but simply making us see what’s already there, that art and the world contain and are contained by each other. Dave Walsh’s dryly innocuous landscapes without a shadow of a living soul; Elenora Mazza’s highly painterly depiction of humans as if only to invoke its mechanical photographic origin; and cityscapes arrestingly stylized with psychological charges by Jakov Pinto. All in varying ways catalyze—make us see the world beyond its surface, prompting it by one painting at a time. —Hitomi Iwasaki
